Paru Tea Bar

San Diego Tea Bar

PARU is an organic pop-up tea bar. Our aim is to educate people on the benefits of teas by offering modern twists on traditional drinks. We've designed our menu with aromatic flavors, and we use fresh and organic ingredients for energy boosts throughout the day.

All of our dried teas are carefully crafted and hand blended proudly in San Diego, California. Visit us at www.paruteabar.com

About us

Launched in May 2017, Paru is a modern San Diego tea company. We use organic, high-grade ingredients harvested during peak season, but we believe quality tea is more than that. We aim for an experience combining aesthetic beauty, health and wellness, and the community of small business and local art.

Coming from the fast-paced corporate world, our founder Amy Truong wanted more calm in her workday. The health and tranquility of tea seemed like the logical answer. It was also the perfect way to honor Amy’s Asian and Parisian roots, as tea is deeply set in these traditions. Paru began with pop-up events all around San Diego. A few months later, we launched our ecommerce branch, bringing our tea to an international audience. A year after we launched, we introduced our subscription tea box and simplified the shopping process—we know how hard it can be to choose from our magnificent selection!

Since consuming tea is a historically social practice, we pride ourselves on mingling with small San Diego businesses. We often source herbs from our local farm partners. We’ve worked with numerous collaborators including distilleries, art installations, yoga classes, and kombucha suppliers. Follow us on social media and catch our unique events.

Our history

A big part of Paru’s aesthetic comes from founder Amy Truong’s international background. She has roots in Vietnam, Japan, and Paris, and many of our blends are inspired by traditional teas from those countries. But it goes deeper than that, linking to a personal family story.

Amy’s family is from Vietnam. Her grandfather, Nguyen Thanh Nam, worked in Japan, leading international distribution of the Panasonic National rice cooker. The demand for this product was strong during the war. Rice cookers were on the list of emergency relief supplies for US soldiers in Vietnam, along with instant noodles and transistor radios. After the War, the family fled to Paris. As a refugee, Amy’s grandfather popularized the rice cooker all over again. Amy took inspiration from this story when founding Paru. Our drinks and collaborations may be modern and Californian, seeing as how Amy has lived in LA, SF, Irvine, and San Diego. But we also aim to honor tea as the international tradition it’s always been.
