Experience: An Introduction to the Fukusa

Learn how to use a fukusa for Japanese tea ceremony, and enjoy a tea and sweet.

About this experience

Saturday, April 19
Choose from two sessions: 12–1 p.m. or 3–4 p.m.
Reservations required

We hope you'll join us for this rare opportunity to share tea and space with renown maker, Kitamura Tokusai, whose family has been Kyoto’s silk textile, or fukusa, maker for practitioners of tea since 1712.

During this intimate session, you’ll learn how one might use a fukusa. In Japanese tea ceremony, a fukusa is used for both practical and symbolic purposes—purifying the tools as a sign of respect to the guests you are serving, for example. Each ticket also includes tea and a traditional sweet. Afterwards, we’ll hold space for questions, and you’ll have time to shop, pre-order, and connect with other tea enthusiasts in the community.

No Japanese tea ceremony experience is required to attend this session. All levels are welcome. This is a chance to practice mindfulness through movement, deepen your understanding for Japanese culture, and enjoy a shared experience.

Unable to attend? Visit the Entoten website for more information about Kitamura Tokusai events in San Diego and Los Angeles. For more about Kitamura Tokusai's history, visit their website.
